Unit One: Roots; Building the Foundation




You should understand the following:
  • the functions and structure of government
  • the roots of American government and the philosophies that guided its development
  • who the American people are and how they are changing
  • the political culture and the characteristics of American democracy
  • the changing characteristics of the American people (such as age, racial make-up and ethnic composition)
  • the political ideologies of Americans and how they affect government policy
  • how Americans view their government and the role it plays in their lives

Step 1 - Introduction:

Introduction to government, past verses the present meanings of the Preamble of our Constitution



Step 2 - Project:

Your job is to choose a philosopher or theory. Research it. Write a powerful description, be sure to include a visual aide (picture, graph and so on) to display in our classroom museum. Below is a pdf guideline of how the museum piece could look.




Talking Points:

  • Why we have the government we have, (how did your person or idea or theory contribute to our government)
  • Give a specific example of what it is
  • Give a specific example of whit it is not - the opposite!


Step 3 -Gallery Walk, Collecting the Information:

Step 4 - Making Sense of it all; create a mind map of the information you collected.
